Lady’s smock

Lady’s Smock is also known as Cuckoo Flower, as it appears in spring around the same time as the first cuckoos are being heard.  It is a lovely flower that can form a pinky mauve cloud over early grass.

Cardamine pratensis is a member of the Bittercress family and has a wonderful horseradish spiciness, making a welcome addition to early spring wild salads.  All parts of the plant can be eaten, so the lovely mauve flowers will add colour to a salad, as well as flavour.
